singer songwriter competition, Chattanooga music,

I started playing guitar when I was 10. When I turned 12, I was playing in a Beatles cover band, the Baytown Beatles out of Houston, TX. I’ve always been a lead-guitar player, playing in some really good bands in Texas and Mississippi. I started the (3-piece) DoubleShotz band in Dallas, TX in 1990, moved it to Jackson, MS in 2000, then to Chattanooga in 2021, after retiring from my day job. I’ve written a lot of songs over the years, but have always preferred copying my favorite guitar players licks and playing their songs.

Will appear in the February 17, 2023 show

Teni Rane grew up in and around a community of Chattanooga musicians who helped nurture in her an early love for music. Her vocals carry power and finesse rolled together with perfect balance to evoke the emotional feel of her lyrics, and her Americana-take on a variety of select covers is delightfully unexpected and well-received by a wide demographic. Through each stage of her writing life, her original songs have revealed a level of maturity that allows her to weave common experiences into songs that captivate people in every age range.

Songwriters Stage 2023

Announcing the launch of the 2023 series! Entries open online on December 15th

The Songwriters Stage has been an institutional rite of passage for Chattanooga’s emerging artists since it was created by The Camp House in 2014. In 2023 the tradition will continue at one of the liveliest spots in town, Gate 11 Distillery.  Four preliminary rounds will be held on the 1st and 3rd Fridays of January and February.  The competition finale will be held in March in the superb acoustics of the new Camp House.

The series takes pride in the fact that competitors must sing and perform their original songs without the aid of back tracks: it is all about the songwriters’ own song, their own voice and their instrument. It is very basic and raw. Complete rules on the website.

Each round of competition has eight to ten performers with two winners each; one from the judge’s ballot and one from the audience choice. Four preliminary rounds will produce eight qualifying contestants for the finale which will produce two Grand Winners. Sponsors provide merchandise for awards along with cash awards collected from cover charges to each event. Judges are selected from the pool of previous winners and industry professionals.
